AP on a Stick
Wi-Fi Survey

The most accurate way to plan your Wi-Fi network on-site. By placing a temporary access point at real-world positions, we simulate your actual network conditions and gather reliable data to optimise coverage before a single permanent AP is installed.

What is an AP on a Stick Survey?

An AP on a Stick (APoS) Wi-Fi survey is a type of on-site survey used to assess and optimise the coverage and performance of a Wi-Fi network. A temporary access point is placed on a pole or stand at specific locations within the area of interest.

The APoS survey is particularly useful in complex environments where Wi-Fi signal behaviour is affected by factors like building materials, obstructions, and RF interference sources. By simulating actual Wi-Fi network conditions using a temporary AP, the surveyor can gather accurate and reliable data to fine-tune the network design for optimal performance.

This survey is typically conducted during the deployment phase of a Wi-Fi network to ensure that access points are strategically placed and the network is configured to deliver reliable and consistent wireless connectivity.

The APoS Survey Process

01
Access Point Setup

The surveyor configures a portable AP with the same specifications as the planned production access points. This includes setting the same SSID, security settings, and channel assignments to simulate real network conditions.

02
AP Placement

The surveyor physically places the temporary AP at different locations throughout the area, typically at the height and position where the production access points will be installed.

03
Signal Measurement

With the AP in place, the surveyor uses specialised Wi-Fi survey software and tools to measure and record the signal strength and quality at various points within the coverage area.

04
Walkthrough

The surveyor walks through the space while carrying the survey tool to collect data across different areas, both indoors and outdoors, including all areas where signal coverage is critical.

05
Data Analysis

After collecting the data, the surveyor analyses the signal measurements to identify areas with weak signal strength, potential interference sources, and coverage gaps that need to be addressed.

06
Network Optimisation

Based on the data analysis, adjustments are made to the AP placement, transmit power, and channel settings to optimise coverage and minimise potential sources of interference.

07
Report Generation

A comprehensive report is generated including heatmaps and signal strength visualisations. The report provides insights into the network's performance, coverage, and any areas that may require further optimisation.

When to Use an AP on a Stick Survey

Complex Buildings

Warehouses, hospitals, factories, and multi-floor offices where building materials and obstructions significantly affect RF signal behaviour.

Deployment Phase

During or just before installation to confirm AP placement decisions before committing to permanent fixings, cable runs, and final configuration.

Hybrid Rollouts

When combined with a Predictive survey, the APoS validates the electronic design on-site, giving you the best of both methods for large or critical deployments.

Pro tip: For large multi-site rollouts, we often survey one representative building on-site using APoS, then use the real-world data to refine and extend the Predictive design across all similar sites. This is a highly cost-effective approach for portfolio-wide deployments.
